The Ratings Are In - Manual vs Electric Toothbrushes
Before 1961, electric toothbrushes were toothbrushes with a cord attached that had to be plugged into an outlet. Many feared being electrocuted, causing sales of electric toothbrushes to never reach full potential. The manual toothbrush's faith was sealed as the most effective method of home dental care. That all changed when the General Electric Company (GE) released the world's first cordless powered toothbrush.
Since then, the electric toothbrush market has exploded. Additions to the features have included; the rotary action (circular motion) released in 1987, the 2 minute timer, the floss action head, the quadpacer, the LCD screen on the shaft, a pressure sensor, and the wireless LCD screen found on the Oral B 9900 Triumph with smart guide.
All the while, the manual toothbrush has remained almost the same since the nylon bristles were used on the toothbrush in the 1930's. Changes have been restricted to the shape of the head and shaft.
Throughout all this, the debate still prevails, which one of these two is more effective towards sound oral health?
Before I go into fluffing up this whole article with facts and details, I'm just going to make it plain and simple; studies published in the American Journal of Dentistry and the British Dental Journal concur that the electric toothbrush is more effective at ridding plaque and preventing gingivitis then manual brushes.
When you think about it, it makes tons of sense. You can reach 100-300 strokes per minute with a manual toothbrush as opposed to the Oral B Triumph 9900, which gets 41,000 strokes per minute. You'd think that with that amount of strokes per minute electric toothbrush users would be more prone to TBA (toothbrush abrasion). Just the opposite in fact, manual users tend to scrub harder feeling that they are doing the right thing by adding some "elbow grease." In addition, many powered brushes today come with a self shut off timer after 2 minutes with 30 second signals to switch quadrants. This gives users a better perspective of the time they've taken and how much they have less. Studies show that manual users can average as low as 30 seconds per brushing session, well below the 2 minutes recommended by the ADA.
With all the correlations related to oral health and heart disease being proven left and right these days, oral health is becoming a top priority. My suggestion would be to invest in an electric toothbrush as they have been proven to be more effective. Who knows, I don't mean to be drastic, but it could save your life one day!

How Do You Control Your Calorie Intake?
Did you know that as a country we eat less fat than we used to, but we are more overweight than we used to be? Weird. Why is this? The answer is because we do not pay attention to how many calories we are consuming. To put in simple terms, if you eat more calories than your body consumes, you are going to be fat. If you use your clothes as an indicator of how fat you are, than the following information will help you. There is something to watch out for though, you must not drop your calorie intake too low, especially if you are active. If you drop your calorie intake below 1200 calories a day, your body will think it is in starvation mode and attempt to hang on to every calorie that you consume.
One way to control your calories is to eat smaller portions. You don't need to fill your plate every night that you eat, you are always allowed to go back for more later is you really need to. The reason for starting out with smaller portions is because it takes a while for your stomach to communicate with your brain that you are full. Another way to watch this is to buy single sized portions.
Another common mistake is that people confuse fat-free with calorie-free. The reason that this is a trap is because many fat free foods are high in calories because they make up for with high sugar content. For example, the reduced Fat Chips Ahoy! Cookie has 50 calories, while a regular Chips Ahoy! has 53. Not really worth it, is it?
Don't deprive yourself of things you enjoy. If you love chocolate, eat it. The trick to this is to eat a smaller portion and not wait until later and inhale the whole thing. Odds are that if you deny yourself you will inhale it later.
The slower you eat, the less you will eat. You can slow yourself down by talking in between bites. If you do this it will give your body a chance to fill full.
Alcohol causes you to eat more. Alcohol stimulates your appetite and this can lead to serious overeating. Rather than drinking before a meal, eat while you drink.
Stopping while you are hungry is a simple fix to control calorie intake. If you eat half of what is on you plate, than take a small break, you will drastically reduce your calorie intake. While on this subject, be sure that you are eating for the right reasons. Sometimes people eat for other reasons such as depression and exhaustion.
Finally, people need to eat regular meals. If you are skipping meals, this will cause you to overeat when you do. If you starve yourself, the odds that you will pig out are greatly increased.
These tips should be more than enough to get you going on the right road to control your calorie intake.
